While working and visiting in India in 2011, I had the good fortune to travel from Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh to one of my good friends home town near the Bay of Bengal. We traveled there overnight by bus to Tanuku, then took a taxi (a well worn Ambassador car, which was awesome!) from there to outside of Amalapuram where he and his family owned a large coconut farm. During our stay in this tropical paradise, we were able to watch the harvest of eight acres of coconut trees, interspersed with rubber trees and small ponds for raising prawns. The photo shows one of the local workers who provide harvest services to farms in the area preparing to start work. There were four or five of these men to harvest just over 8 acres of trees. Each came outfitted as you see in the photo; handmade bamboo ladder, large machete, ropes and other climbing gear. They made short work of the 8 acres. A team followed them with a tractor and loaded the newly picked coconuts in the wagon and taken to an assembly area where they were sorted and counted. The entire operation was finished in just over half a day. I had my first 'fresh picked' coconut milk and meat, and it was the best I have ever tasted. We closed out the day eating spicy snacks and drinking Indian beer while we watched the sunlight fade over the Bay of Bengal. With the aperture open, a slight camera movement is used to change the look and texture of the scene, while retaining the natural shapes and identity. Honestly, this photo was a bit of an accident. I was photographing in a remote area of a forest by myself when I was startled to see two people walking toward me, both wearing the same color coat. Known as "The Sunrise Side" of Michigan, towns along Lake Huron on the eastern side of the state enjoy some amazing sunrises. I had family in a couple of different towns along the coast for a number of years, and so was able to enjoy many beautiful mornings, both summer and winter. The colors, reflections and clouds seem to change with each sunrise, so you never know what to expect. When we awoke the next morning, we were surprised to find it had snowed overnight (this was September), and there was about four inches of light, fluffy snow covering everything. Not to be deterred, we drove to the trailhead, put on our packs and started out. It was grey and overcast when we left, but soon the clouds gave way to a classic sunny, blue sky Colorado morning. The first lighthouse at this location (know then as Ottawa Point) was a put in service in 1853 as a rubble stone tower, with a cast iron light room and a fixed white light. The current tower was completed and began operation in 1877. This 67 foot brick and masonry structure experienced a number of modifications, upgrades and changes through the years and is still in operation today, using the original Fresnel Lens installed in first lighthouse (and subsequently moved to the new tower) in 1856. This is not only a interesting Great Lakes historical building, but also a great place to view amazing sunrises over Lake Huron and/or beautiful sunsets over Tawas Bay. This image was created on a late October evening, just before sunset. I have this print displayed in my office on a 16 x 24 black edge canvas wrap, a medium which I prefer for this type of subject. As always, I had my camera with me and took a few photos. When I got home that night and reviewed the images, I was not happy with the result - probably from rushing too much. I left for work early the next day, brought a tripod and was lucky enough that the sunrise again setup the same scene. This time I did a better job capturing the image I envisioned. This photograph has won a couple of awards, and actually is part of an art display at one of the local college campuses. I was photographing in a remote area of a forest by myself when I was startled to see two people walking toward me, both wearing the same color coat. Known as "The Sunrise Side" of Michigan, towns along Lake Huron on the eastern side of the state enjoy some amazing sunrises. I had family in a couple of different towns along the coast for a number of years, and so was able to enjoy many beautiful mornings, both summer and winter. The colors, reflections and clouds seem to change with each sunrise, so you never know what to expect. When we awoke the next morning, we were surprised to find it had snowed overnight (this was September), and there was about four inches of light, fluffy snow covering everything. Not to be deterred, we drove to the trailhead, put on our packs and started out. It was grey and overcast when we left, but soon the clouds gave way to a classic sunny, blue sky Colorado morning. The views were amazing as you can see - the snow gave the landscape a completely different look than we had experienced the previous four days. I have three or four photographs I love from this amazing morning hike. The first lighthouse at this location (know then as Ottawa Point) was a put in service in 1853 as a rubble stone tower, with a cast iron light room and a fixed white light. The current tower was completed and began operation in 1877. This 67 foot brick and masonry structure experienced a number of modifications, upgrades and changes through the years and is still in operation today, using the original Fresnel Lens installed in first lighthouse (and subsequently moved to the new tower) in 1856. This is not only a interesting Great Lakes historical building, but also a great place to view amazing sunrises over Lake Huron and/or beautiful sunsets over Tawas Bay. Wagons like this one were used to transport Borax mined in Death Valley at the Harmony Borax Works overland to Mojave California - the location of the closest railroad in the 1880's. This early morning image highlights both the borax wagon on display as well as the harsh environment of the location. Extreme temperatures and lack of water were only two of the hardships endured by the men and animals working the mines.
